Back Of The Net: fine things we've found online by Aaron› 12 Oct 2012
Don't worry - we might have had a week off last week, but it was a temporary setback, and we're back firing on all cylinders, fit for the game and definitely not suffering from any sore throats or dicky tummies. It is of course an international weekend, and an interesting one for all the home nations - there'll be plenty of channel-hopping tonight. We've recommended The Stiles Council a few times for all things England, and the team behind that blog are also covering (almost) all the other home nations with as much attention. The Lansdowne Roar is the latest addition to the TFT collection and, although we know the Republic isn't part of the United Kingdom, we also know that most of the squad's players ply their trade in the British leagues, and therefore many of us will be interested in how they get on against Germany tonight. Minus points to the group behind these blogs for the lack of a Welsh football blog though, although we're sure it's on the way....?
Away from the internationals this weekend, there is still some league action as well, with Leagues 1 and 2 keeping the domestic clock ticking. We've talked about how much we like infographics and data visualisation here before, but this latest discovery has taken it into another stratosphere. Giving an in-depth evaluation of how each of the Football League's 72 clubs have fared in their opening 10 games this season, the Experimental 3-6-1 blog have pushed the bar, given 110% and gone at least three whole hogs. Essential reading for fans of any club outside the top league, who get enough of this stuff already - check it out here.
Further down the football pyramid, and tomorrow is a big occasion for football at an amateur level. October 13th is Non League Day, where football fans are encouraged to check out their local non-league team and enjoy a very different experience to your typical top level match. Many clubs have some great offers on for fans of all clubs, and there's a game close to every part of the country, so there's no excuse for not going along to check out some action tomorrow afternoon - what else are you going to do with your Saturday? Find out about the nearest games to you at the Non League Day website.
Travelling even further down the levels to a place where it's not actually football any more, but some plastic figures being flicked around a table, we have a link to the surreal picture posted at the top of the page. We found a link to Subbuteo Art thanks to our friends at In Bed With Maradona, and we're very glad we did, because who doesn't want to look at a site dedicated to hand-crafted Subbuteo figures of iconic players, famous goals and complete teams? Subbuteo Art can even create some bespoke figures for a special occasion, so if you want to celebrate a birthday by recreating that screamer you scored for the under-11s that no one else remembers, this is the man to ask!
Finally this week, something that football fans at any level can enjoy - and perhaps some will enjoy more than most. The search-engine scrambling Stadium Porn is dedicated to news, links and pictures of football grounds around the world, so that if you want to keep up to date with new grounds being developed in Brazil or dig out retro pictures of long-forgotten grounds, this is the place to browse. We take no responsibility for any meetings with HR due to the name of the blog though! Check it out here, and tune in next week for more football-themed finds..
