Manchester vs NYC: city’s firefighters hit the football pitch for charity by Aaron› 17 Aug 2012
With the full football league programme starting up this weekend, there’s plenty of games to get your teeth into over the next few days, but one match stands out for us amongst the usual fixtures up and down the country. On Sunday, two groups of firemen will be playing at the new Salford City Stadium, bringing a distinctly international air to proceedings as they look to raise plenty of money for charity.
Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service have invited
the Fire Department New York over to England for a special game of football in
order to raise money for two great causes, playing against each other before
joining forces to take on a football team made up of celebrities. All the teams
will be wearing customised Umbro teamwear kits for the games, and we’re looking
forward to seeing both of the firefighting teams in action. Greater Manchester's team will be in the royal blue and white kit pictured above, while the New York players will be in the red kit pictured below.
Both teams are raising money for causes close to their hearts. The GMFRS are raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity, which raises money for those injured in the line of duty. The FDNY are aiming to raise funds for The Sergio G Villanueva Endowed Soccer Scholarship Fund, which helps students in their home city get a college education. It’s named after Sergio Villanueva, a football-loving fireman from New York who lost his life in the September 11th tragedy.
The firefighters from New York have got a full plan for their time in the UK, where they’ll be taking in Premier League and Championship football matches before their own clash on Sunday. With the football kicking off at 4pm on Sunday, there’s also plenty of entertainment planned for the day from 1pm, including music from Unity FM DJs and cheerleading displays. For information on tickets for this great cause, head over to their special Facebook page or follow them on Twitter.
All the teams in Sunday’s games will be tailored in Umbro’s smart teamwear kits, perfect for teams at any level who want to look stylish on the pitch. For more information on Umbro’s Teamwear range, take a look at the website.
