Music Icon Damon Albarn Joins Umbro’s Faces Of England by Aaron› 11 Jul 2012

The latest star to celebrate their pride and passion for England and the culture he has helped to create, singer and songwriter Damon Albarn is today unveiled as the latest star of Umbro’s Faces Of England. Following in the footsteps of football legend Paul Gascoigne, Damon now dons the England home shirt to proudly display his allegiance.

One of the leading creative forces of his generation, Damon Albarn has had a lasting impact on English music, first of all as the frontman of indie legends Blur, and then as the main creative force behind The Good, The Bad, The Queen and the globally renowned supergroup Gorillaz. He’s also found the time to write two acclaimed operas, produce a number of celebrated albums, and head up a record label.

It's a wonder that Damon has the time to watch football, but he's an avid Chelsea and England fan, and proudly displays his support for the national team as the second English icon to feature in our “Faces of England ” campaign. Following in the footsteps of football hero Paul ‘Gazza’ Gascoigne, Damon will be seen on a massive billboard in his native London, as well as on posters up and down the country. Damon is pictured proudly wearing the current England Home shirt, tailored by Umbro, which will be worn by the England team during the 2014 qualifiers

Speaking about his love of the game, Damon said: “Football is a massive part of our culture and I’ve always been under the spell of the theatre of it. It’s my default, being English and wearing the England shirt always builds on that sense of identity.”

When asked what it meant to be English, Albarn added; “Being English is a very multicultural experience, England is a gateway to the world and I love the cornucopia of it.”
