Following last week's chat with Argentinean Umbro Golaço winner Javi Castabal, we thought we'd catch up with the People's Winner of the competition. South African Jonty Thomas won the most public votes thanks to this fantastic strike, and he'll be joining four other winners in Brazil next month, enjoying the prize of a lifetime. Here's what he had to say about his goal, the prize and his footballing ambitions... "
Tell us about your Umbro Golaço goal, where was it scored?
‘It was scored on one of the fields at the University of the Western Cape. It was the 2013 U19 Metropolitan Premier Cup Qualifiers, and I was playing for Bothasig AFC against Robinvale Spurs FC. We won that game 1 – 0 which put my team through to the next round of the Cup, we went on to qualify for the tournament and finish 8th which was a great achievement, being a community club. We won our group and achieved the title of most promising amateur club.I've been playing for the club since I was five years old.'
Why did you decide to enter the Golaço competition?'I felt it would be a great honor to win such a once in a lifetime opportunity and it would be a dream come true.'
do you think was so special about your goal that made it stand out?
'I think what made my goal stand out was the fact that I left the keeper stranded and all he could do was watch the ball go past him. Also, the fact that it was scored in the top right corner.'
How did it feel when you found out that you’d won?
'When I found out I won, I was ecstatic. It was a dream come true! I am still in shock at the moment and only think reality will hit me once I land in Brazil.'
does football mean to you?
'Football has always been my passion, and always will be. After the trip I plan to take what I learnt and apply it in my game and build from there.'
Had you seen the famous Roberto Carlos goal before?
'Yes, but not at the time I was only 3 years old! I have seen it feature in many youtube compilations and on SuperSport in the Greatest Goals segment. I think he definitely meant it. You can see by the way he stepped up to take the free kick, how he placed the ball, his run up and the way he struck the ball that he had the intention of scoring a goal of such great calibre.'
Thanks to Jonty for taking the time to speak to us, and congratulations again to him on his terrific winning goal - you can see it here along with all the other Umbro Golaço winners.
