From strength to strength
In 1925 a government order of P.T. shirts for the armed forces ensured that Umbro got off to a dream start from which we have never looked back.
By the 1930s, business, both at home and overseas, was going so well that 10,000 sq feet of new warehouse space was taken in Wilmslow and a new factory built in Macclesfield.
Even the outbreak of war didn't slow Umbro down. Production simply switched from sportswear to army clothing and the making of internal fittings for Lancaster bombers. The return to peacetime was celebrated with the opening of another new factory, this time in Stockport.
It was now that Umbro began to capitalise on the pre-war success of Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday, the 1934 and 1935 FA Cup Final winners respectively, of which both teams wore Umbro shirts!
