Finest Hours
Universitario are the most successful team in Peru's football history, and are also the only Peruvian team to ever make it to the final of the Copa Libertadores, South America's biggest football competition. In 1972, they faced Argentinean team Independiente in the two-legged final, but lost 2-1.
The year 2000 was also a significant one for the club, as they won their first Tricampeonato - three consecutive championships. By securing the title in 1998, 1999 and 2000, Universitario became only the third team in Peru to achieve this impressive accolade.
Folk Heroes
Teodoro ‘Lolo' Fernández, was a hero to Universitario fans for his record with the club and the Peruvian national team. The club's record goalscorer, he played for Universitario for his whole career, helping the team to six league titles. He was also the top scorer in the 1939 Copa America, which was won by Peru.
Another player who spent his entire career with The Us, Jose Luis ‘El Puma' Carranza is also fondly remembered for his time at the club between 1988 and 1997. His jersey number 22 has been retired by the club to celebrate the 570 games he played for the club.
Fans
Thanks to their long standing success, Universitario are regularly seen as being one of the most, if not the most, popular teams in Peru. The clubs ‘ultra' supporters are known as Barra Oriente and Trinchera Norte, and have been the strongest fans of the club since the 1960s.
