On the final day of the 2005 season, Gamba was one of five teams still in with a chance of winning the J League. A point behind leaders and city rivals Cerezo Osaka, Akira Nishino’s side travelled to Kawasake Frontale knowing a win might not be enough unless other results went in their favour. Goals from Endo, Tsuneyasu Miyamoto and Araujo (2) put Gamba on their way to a 4-2 victory but it was only when news came through Cerezo had conceded a last-minute equaliser against FC Tokyo that the Gamba fans ran across the track and onto the field to celebrate their team's first-ever title.
