Rituals can be small, private acts: silent mantras or socks and shoes in a certain order. They can be communal: songs or overly elaborate handshakes. And they can be brilliantly bonkers, like smacking a kiss on a bald man’s head.
In January, we teamed up with our Umbro sponsored teams including Argentinos Juniors, Cape Town City FC, FC Lorient and Terengganu FC, to call on grassroots sides to share clips of their own match day rituals with us.
From synchronised warm-up routines to dances and pre-match songs, you didn’t disappoint. From all submissions, clips from three teams were entered into a public vote with South Africa’s Kepa Celtics FC finishing in first place.
“As a club, we are heavily influenced by the 'Kasi Flava' style of play. Before every game, we perform a variation of the dance you see in our video to inspire rhythm among our players and encourage team spirit. It also helps to calm them down and ease any pre-match nerves.” – Founder and Head Coach, Dumisa Ngqoyiyana
Congratulations to Kepa Celtics FC who will receive new kit for the whole squad.
